His Pharmaceutical Sales interview was going well.
Good walkthrough.
Clear STAR answers.
Smart candidate.
I was nodding along.
Then he asked:
“𝘿𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙧𝙪𝙜 𝙩𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙚?”
A pause.
Silence.
Not because I was offended.
Because my brain shifted.
In competitive interviews, that’s all it takes.
That one question sounded risky.
Candidates usually mean no harm.
But as a hiring manager, here’s what I hear:
✦ How will you impact my team?
✦ Are you comfortable bending rules?
✦ Will I have to worry about compliance with you?
Pharmaceutical sales is built on trust ⤵
➨ With physicians.
➨ With regulators.
➨ With the brand.
➨ With hospitals.
➨ With clinics.
Anything that hints as “risky” kills momentum.
That candidate didn’t get the job.
In this industry, integrity isn’t assumed.
It’s evaluated.
Have you ever asked a question and immediately regretted it?
